Artist Statement
As a painter, I explore themes of spirituality and motherhood through use of sacred geometric patterns and biomorphic shapes. My process is deeply meditative, embracing the calming rhythm of drafting patterns using grids and interlocking circles. The transparency of oil paint allows me to build depth, capturing the passage of time. Overlapping circles are a recurring motif in my recent work and have been used in decorative art since ancient times. By combining 7 overlapping circles, I create the 6-pointed pattern called the “seed of life” or the “star of creation” symbolizing growth. When I change the pattern to 13 circles, it forms a 12-pointed radiating pattern echoing the months of the year or the face of a clock. The full moon celebrates the Mother Goddess and an experience that is at once unique and universal. My branching lines and “mammary flowers” are informed by physiology, presenting the mothering body as a reflection of divine Nature. In composing images layered with rich colors and meaning I am remembering that life is cyclical, persistent, and ever hopeful.
